What is Karate?
Karate is a martial art developed in Japan. It is a fighting skill which uses all parts of the body. Karate techniques are mostly comprised of attacking (striking, punching and kicking) and blocking moves, and are different from those of Judo, Jujitsu and Aikido which focus on throwing techniques. Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art that is based on Shotokan Karate. Kung Fu is a collective name for the various styles of Chinese Karate. There are many different styles of martial arts, but there is no ultimate style or best art. The fighting methods are just different and the difference is mostly in rules and what techniques they emphasize.
What is traditional Karate?
It is non-contact Karate. There is another kind of Karate that allows full contact (with or without protective gears). At our dojo, we allow no physical contact in our sparring. The punches and kicks are thrown but aimed at about an inch away from the target for the maximum safety. More information on traditional Karate can be found under Shotokan and more on the training we do under Training.
How is IKD Dojo of Australia different from other Karate studios?
We provide martial arts training as found in Japan. Our instructors are well experienced in teaching the art of karate. Quality is not compromised in our training so that the true art is transferred. More information is found under Become a IKD Member.
Our instructors have more than 20 years of experience each and they are all well qualified to teach. Please see their qualifications at our Instructors page.
